Selection of Past Talks

Job Points: Dump stats, job points, skill trees: nerds have a lot of practice building characters designed to excel in their chosen professions, but we don’t always know how to do the same in real life. This workshop will provide a career planning framework grounded in character creation systems, like the kinds found in Final Fantasy titles, D&D campaigns, or Bioware games. Together, we’ll make a space to reflect, clarify, and celebrate our experiences and fill out a custom character sheet for our professional selves.Storytelling as a Career Asset: The most dreaded and predictable part of the job interview is when you hear, ‘Tell me about yourself.’ But what if you had a clear idea of how to share your strengths, identity, and potential? Storytelling is how we make sense of the world, and narrative intelligence is the ability to leverage the psychological power of a story to change behavior and inspire action. This workshop will discuss storytelling as a key tool to your career journey and provide a framework for developing your own professional narrative.Volunteer Leadership - Board Service in Seattle: Want to increase your impact in your community? Ready to develop new skills or take on a new challenge? Local nonprofit boards are hungry for members, but too many people miss the opportunity to serve on a board entirely. In this session, participants will learn the mindsets of effective nonprofit boards, understand the opportunity to build personal leadership through board service, and discover what sort of boards might appeal to them.Nonprofit Work: Challenges and Champions - The nonprofit sector plays a vital role in our community, even if we don't often recognize it. And, more and more, nonprofit employees are asked to do more important work with less and less support. In this session, participants will learn about the structure of the sector, understand topics like overheard and burnout from the nonprofit staff perspective, and how better to serve as a steward and supporter of nonprofit work.
